Sunrit Panda – Teaching AI to Children in Rural West Bengal Village

Thank you for your inquiry regarding my application for the summer grant. As a student in the Statistics and Machine Learning department, I have amassed a comprehensive academic and practical background in artificial intelligence, equipping me with the expertise necessary to impart advanced AI and ML concepts to young learners.

My academic journey in AI is rigorous and multifaceted. I have undertaken a broad array of courses that cover both the theoretical underpinnings and the practical applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence. This includes delving into the mathematical foundations that drive AI algorithms as well as exploring their applications across diverse sectors such as cognitive science, transportation systems, and more. Such a comprehensive curriculum has not only enhanced my understanding of core AI principles but also honed my ability to apply this knowledge creatively in various contexts.

Moreover, my engagement with AI extends beyond academia. I have actively explored the intersection of artificial intelligence and art, utilizing platforms like Stable Diffusion and the DALLE model to create AI-generated artwork. This fusion of technology and creativity underscores my ability to teach AI from a unique, interdisciplinary perspective that is especially appealing and accessible to young students. Additionally, my ongoing exploration of potential AI solutions for enhancing training in artistic sports such as taekwondo, figure skating, and gymnastics, illustrates my commitment to leveraging AI for innovative, practical problem-solving.

Regarding the safeguarding of minors in educational settings, I am deeply committed to ensuring a secure and ethical learning environment. My approach is informed by established guidelines from reputable organizations, including the NSF’s AI4K12 initiative, which provides comprehensive curriculum guidance designed with robust safeguards. This framework emphasizes the importance of teaching students about the ethical dimensions of AI, including the management of data privacy and the mitigation of biases, which are crucial for fostering a responsible use of technology.

NSF-funded research initiatives, such as the development of interactive AI exhibits and educational games for younger audiences, serve as models for how AI can be introduced safely and effectively in educational contexts. These initiatives demonstrate the potential of AI to make learning more engaging and accessible while also addressing critical ethical and safety considerations. For example, projects that introduce students to AI through gamified learning environments not only make complex concepts more digestible but also ensure that these educational experiences are aligned with rigorous safety standards.

In summary, my extensive educational background in AI and ML, combined with my practical experiences and a strong commitment to ethical teaching practices, uniquely qualifies me to lead a program that introduces young people to AI. By adhering to established educational standards and leveraging innovative teaching methods, I am prepared to offer a program that is not only intellectually stimulating but also aligned with the highest standards of safety and inclusivity.
