Akuei Johnson – Changing Minds: From Bullets to Books, From Shadows to Light

I write to you with deep gratitude and renewed hope to share the impact of this summer’s initiative, Changing Minds: From Bullets to Books, From Shadows to Light, a project born from the dream to transform war-torn despair into empowered potential. This summer marked a defining chapter in our ongoing mission to bridge the gap between education and opportunity for the youth of South Sudan.

Project Overview

In partnership with Changing Minds: From Bullets to Books, we sought to equip high school students, many of whom are survivors of conflict and displacement, with 21st-century technological and professional skills. These young scholars, once victims of war’s silence, now type their first lines of code, draft their first resumes, and navigate digital platforms that connect them to a wider world of knowledge.

Our goal was clear: to ensure that education in South Sudan does not end at the classroom door, but becomes a gateway to global engagement.

Key Achievements Enabled by Your Support

1. Digital Empowerment & Computer Literacy

Through the establishment of an introductory and advanced computer literacy program, students learned to use essential software tools, conduct online research, and communicate effectively in a digital space. For many, this was their first encounter with technology—and it sparked a profound sense of agency and curiosity.

2. Coding & Software Development Training

The program introduced the basics of programming, nurturing creativity and problem-solving among students. Simple projects in web design and logical thinking gave them the confidence to see themselves as future innovators and digital builders.

3. Career Coaching & Mentorship

We organized mentorship sessions focusing on leadership, goal-setting, and professional communication. These workshops helped students envision tangible futures, whether in technology, education, or entrepreneurship, and provided practical steps for achieving those dreams.

4. Access and Inclusion Through Infrastructure

With limited access to electricity and connectivity in Bor, we invested in sustainable resources, desktop computers, learning materials, and consistent power supply solutions, to ensure that no student was left behind in the learning process.

Human Impact

Behind every initiative lies a story. There’s Majok, who once wandered the streets after losing his family, now learning to design presentations to share his vision for rebuilding his village. There’s Amer, who once feared the future, now helping her peers write emails to potential universities. Each keystroke has become a declaration: we are ready to rebuild our country through knowledge.

The program has reignited the dreams of a generation long silenced by conflict. These students no longer see themselves as orphans of war, but as architects of peace, progress, and innovation.

Looking Ahead

This summer marks only the beginning. With continued support, we plan to:

● Expand our curriculum to include intermediate coding, digital storytelling, and entrepreneurship modules.

● Establish a technology lab that will serve as a community resource hub for digital education in Bor.

● Partner with universities and global organizations to secure internship and scholarship pathways for program graduates.

Our long-term vision is to build a digital bridge connecting South Sudanese youth to global knowledge economies, turning education into employment, and potential into progress.

Closing Reflections

Your generosity has given these young men and women not only tools, but purpose.

You have helped them transform fear into confidence, and isolation into opportunity.

On behalf of every student, teacher, and mentor, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Together, we are proving that even in the most fragile places, education can be the most powerful act of reconstruction.

With deepest appreciation,

Akuei Johnson Ateny
